PDF Page Numbers Adder

Add a page number label to every page of a PDF, or a selection of pages — with a fully custom format ({n} for the number, {total} for the count, e.g. "Page {n} of {total}"), 6 corner/edge positions, adjustable font size, and a custom starting number for skipping an unnumbered cover page. Labels are drawn directly onto each page as real text. Runs entirely client-side using pdf-lib — nothing is uploaded.

About this tool

This tool adds a page number label to every page of a PDF (or a selection of pages), with a fully custom format — {n} is replaced with that page's number and {total} with the total page count, so "Page {n} of {total}" becomes "Page 1 of 12", "Page 2 of 12", and so on. The starting number is independent of the page's actual position in the document: setting it to 1 while numbering starts on page 2 (skipping an unnumbered cover page) labels that page "1" anyway, the same way word processors handle a numbered document with a cover page. Labels are drawn directly onto each page as real text, becoming a permanent part of the page content. It runs entirely client-side using the pdf-lib library — nothing you upload is ever sent anywhere.

What you can do

  • Custom label format — "1", "Page 1 of 10", or anything with {n} and {total}
  • 6 positions, adjustable font size, and a custom starting number
  • Download the numbered PDF with one click
  • Nothing is uploaded — everything runs locally in your browser

How to use

Step 1

Upload a PDF and set the format

Use {n} for the page number and {total} for the page count, e.g. "Page {n} of {total}".

Step 2

Pick position and starting number

Any of the 6 corner/edge positions, and a starting number if page 1 shouldn't be labeled "1".

Step 3

Apply and download

Every page gets its label, drawn directly onto the page.

Example

A 5-page report, numbered:

Format

Page {n} of {total}

Result

...

one label per page, positioned bottom-center by default.

How your data is handled

This tool is labeled 🟢 Browser: your PDF is numbered directly in your browser using the pdf-lib library — nothing is uploaded to a server, and nothing about it is retained once you leave the page.

Frequently asked questions

What can I use in the format string?+

{n} is replaced with the page's computed number, and {total} with the total number of pages being labeled. Anything else in the format (like the word "Page" or "of") is kept as literal text.

How does "start at" work?+

It sets what number the first labeled page gets, independent of that page's actual position in the document — useful for skipping a cover page: if you leave page 1 unlabeled and start numbering from page 2, setting "start at" to 1 still labels that page "1".

Can I number only some pages?+

Yes — uncheck "Number every page" and enter a page range like 2-10 to skip a cover page or number only a section of the document. {n} still counts from "start at" through the pages you selected, not their absolute position in the document.

Does adding page numbers affect the rest of the page content?+

No — the original content is untouched. The number label is simply drawn on top, positioned near the edge you chose so it doesn't overlap the page's existing content in typical documents.

Is my PDF uploaded anywhere?+

No — it's numbered directly in your browser using the pdf-lib library. Nothing here ever leaves your device.
